John Cloudman
John Cloudman (1813 - 1892)
John Cloudman was born in Newburyport, Maine, in 1813. Early in life he worked as a carpenter, but after opting for an art career, he sailed to Paris in 1847 for one year of study with Paul Delaroche. Upon his return to the United States, he began a successful career as a portrait painter in Portland, Maine. During the years 1852-53, he went to Northern California where he painted the Pomo Indians. He died in Bethel, Maine, on Oct. 11, 1892.
