Walt Disney (1901 - 1966)
An American original, Walt Disney was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1901. Beginning his career as a cartoonist in the 1920s, Disney’s imagination was responsible for some of the most remarkable developments in 20th-centtury film and entertainment. From the short animated films with his beloved characters, such as Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, he progressed to feature length animation in film, prime time television programming and theme parks. During his lifetime, Disney and his studio won 48 Academy Awards and received more than 950 honors. Walt Disney was presented with honorary degrees from Harvard, Yale, UCLA and the University of Southern California. He died in 1966, but his name will live on with his creations.
