Bert G. Phillips (1868 - 1956)

In 1898 Bert Phillips settled in Taos, becoming the first Anglo artist to choose New Mexico as his year-round home. A few years later, in 1915, Phillips was joined with his friends - Ernest L. Blumenschein, Joseph Henry Sharp, E. Irving Couse, Oscar Berninghaus and W. Herbert Dunton - to create the nucleus of the Taos Society of Artists. Though he studied widely abroad, the Taos Indians provided Phillips with his most intense artistic inspiration. Aiming to recreate the harmony and rhythm that he admired in Native American life, he developed a naturalistic style, which critics later called both realistic and romantic.
