Eanger Irving Couse (1866 - 1936)

E. Irving Couse was the "painter of Indians by firelight." Born in Saginaw, Michigan, Couse knew from childhood that he wanted to be an artist. He began his formal art training at the Chicago Art Institute. In 1883 he went to Paris to the Julian Academy. Couse and his wife Virginia first came to Taos, New Mexico, in 1901. He was a great artist and astute businessman, achieving fame and financial success, especially while living in Taos. Millions of people across America recognized his art because it appeared in the annual calendar of the Santa Fe Railway Company.
